Creativity is not enough anymore

About a week ago I was reading the blog of photographer Chase Jarvis (linked on the side) and he wrote about creativity and how it is no longer enough in the industry of being creative for a living. I don't want to copy him word for word or even sound like him at all, so instead of linking his post I'll just type what it means in my own definition (although you should still check out his blog, pretty awesome guy).

The reason why I believe this is true is because you can see it in the industry today. Clients don't want someone to merely recreate something in a new, creative way, but they want them to do something different. They want the other points on the board: different, innovative, and brilliant. I'm not saying that you won't get anywhere if you don't use these things, but it would benefit you if you made these methods habits. For those of you who want to use these, I'll just simply define them for you below. (click "read more" to continue)

Different:
Creativity is a valuable asset, don't get me wrong, but there's got to be more to it. People now don't just want someone to creatively recreate something, but come up with something totally unheard of. A good example of this would be the recent Old Spice commercials. The concept is original, but also creative. If possible for you, make up something, but then add a twist to it. That would make it all the more original and creative.

Brilliant:
Like Chase said on his blog, how do you define brilliance? Its when you work harder, think more about what you're creating. I mean, creativity is definitely a big role in creating things, but it also has to make sense in some way. Just think about that while you're creating.

Innovative:
Last, but not least, be innovative. Innovation is a way of doing something new. In simpler terms, setting a new trend or improving on what was there before. Just like the Wright Brothers "innovated" flight, innovate whatever you're doing. Try new things, do things from a different perspective. It can't hurt, right?

Even I am trying to do everything listed up there, so don't feel bad if its not a overnight thing, but it is something everyone should work at. People try new things all the time and, hopefully, they're remembered for them. Just like James Cameron's AVATAR being noted for its outstanding use of 3D technology. Remember, never be scared to push the envelope. Someone has to do it, and why shouldn't it be you?
